Join us in the studio for a suspenseful night of shibari shots.
In this three hour workshop we're joined by experienced Shibari rigger and photographer Hector and his two rope bunnies, exploring the connection and creativity of shibari, the Japanese art of rope tying.
The night opens with a conversation about consent, communication and connection, before the performers show a series of floor ties and aerial suspension.
Throughout the tying, James will guide you through how he manipulates lighting, angles and composition to capture the different sides of it: the tying process itself, and the connection and communication between the two performers.
This is a practical workshop, everyone gets the chance to shoot and put these skills into practice. We're using continuous lighting on the night, so no technical knowledge of studio lighting is needed to take part.

Do I need studio photography experience?
No - In this workshop we will be using continuous lighting.
No prior studio photography experience or strobe work is needed to participate in this workshop.
Will I actually get to use the lights?
Yes.
This isn’t a workshop where you stand in the back of the room watching someone else shoot.
Everyone gets time behind the camera using the lights, adjusting settings, and taking photos.
The goal is that you leave with real hands-on experience, not just theory.
What will I learn?
In this workshop you'll learn how to light, frame, and capture a Shibari session in real time.
Do I need to bring my own camera?
Yes.
Bring your own camera.
Any DSLR or mirrorless with manual mode will work. We won't be using strobes in this workshop, so triggers are not necessary.
Do I need to bring lenses or other equipment?
Just bring your camera (with a charged battery), lens, and SD card.
The studio lighting, triggers, modifiers, and backdrops are all provided during the workshop.
How many people are in each workshop?
Spots are limited to 6 people so everyone actually gets time shooting and asking questions.
This isn’t a 20-person lecture.
It’s a small group session where everyone gets involved.
Will I get to tie/be tied?
No - we have professionals for that.
This workshop is a way for photographers to shoot something new and learn about the art of shibari, and for shibari riggers to learn practical tips to capture their handy work.
How long is the workshop?
The workshop runs for roughly 3 hours.
It will start with a conversation about consent, communication, and connection.
Hector and the models will share some of their history with Shibari and speak on what it is that they do and why they do it.
They will then work through a series of floor and suspension ties while James show you how to light and capture the experience.
What if the workshop is sold out?
Tough luck.

The workshop is held at Siren Studios in Botany, Sydney.
